Doubling Milk, Restoring Hope in Nyabera
Meet Mama Veronica Topa, an elderly widow from Nyabera village. Despite her old age, she is the guardian of eight orphans left behind by her sons and daughters. Known for her ever-present smile, her neighbors often wonder how she carries the heavy responsibility of raising such a large family in today’s difficult economy.
A Story of Transformation
In January, First Bridge Foundation distributed livestock feeds in Ruma-Kaksingri, one of the wards that benefitted from our drought mitigation project. Mama Veronica was among the beneficiaries.
After undergoing training on proper feed administration, storage, and handling, she carefully applied the lessons learned. When our team visited her home weeks later, she welcomed us with overwhelming joy.
Impact of the Project
Alongside livestock feed, Mama Veronica also received unconditional cash support. She explained how this assistance helped her pay school fees for her grandchildren with ease.
Over just four weeks, the results were evident:
Her lactating cow produced double the amount of milk.
She now supplies a local school with 3 liters of milk daily, which is deducted from her grandchild’s fees.
Her grandchildren enjoy a healthier diet, including regular milk and even fruits.
The family has extra income from milk sales, easing their financial struggles.
Her face lit up as she described the relief:
“My grandchildren are healthier… we have enough food, a balanced diet, and even fruits. We sell the milk and meet our other financial obligations.”
A Call for Sustainability
As our monitoring team concluded the visit, Mama Veronica expressed her deepest gratitude and one heartfelt concern:
“How do I sustain this milk production once the feeds are over? Will I return to the hardship I was in? Please, help us find a way to keep our cows in this productive state.”
With tears of joy, she asked us to convey her sincere thanks to all project funders:
“I pray that God will bless everyone whose hand is in this project.”
Looking Ahead
Her testimony raises vital questions about sustainability. Both beneficiaries and agricultural officers in the county have recommended extending support to ensure long-term success.
As First Bridge Foundation – Kenya, we deeply appreciate the partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and The German Corporation. Together, we are touching lives and restoring dignity for the most vulnerable in our communities.
